Open Question: Why is the infastructure so old in some parts of the US?
Ok, so this might make some Americans angry but I’m going to ask anyways as I’m curious …
I’m not from the US but I’ve been to the US a lot to visit my relatives who live there and also for vacation, and something I’ve noticed is that in SOME parts of the US, the infrastructure is really old and outdated. Bad roads, old wire span traffic signals, hardly any street lights, broken sidewalks, lack of litter removal on freeway interchanges, far leaning wood hydro poles, etc. Now obviously not all parts of the US are like this, there are some very nice parts of the US that are quite modern looking (Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Miami, etc) but other places look out of date… so, why is this, I mean isn’t this supposed to be “the greatest nation on earth” ?
Open Question: Grade 10 Chemistry Questions?
Hi, i need help with chemistry homework about pH of Sudbury, Ontario lakes. It is about three lakes there called Clearwater, Hannah, and Lohi. They are some questions so please help me try to answer any of them. I would appreciate it a lot thank you!
Small Summary
Metals like nickel and copper have been mined in the Sudbury region since 1885. The processes associated with isolating these metals, however, have resulted in the release of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. By 1960, over 2 x 10^6 tonnes of SO2 were being poured into the air each year. The sulfur dioxide mixed with rain water precipitated over wide areas as acid precipitation. Today the amount of SO2 released has been greatly reduced, but about 3 x 10^5 tonnes are still released each year.
Questions
1) Three separate approaches used to reduce the acidity of the lakes in the Sudbury region were A. adding lime, a base, to the lakes to neutralize the acid, B. adding lime to the soil around the lakes and C. reducing sulfur dioxide emmissions.
Predict what you think has been the best approach to reducing the acidity of the lakes. Explain why.
2) Crushed limestone was applied to a large area of barren watershed around Hannah Lake to provide soil for the planting of new trees. What effect did that have on the acidity of the lake? Explain your thinking.
3) Clear water Lake was surrounded by barren watershed after the original trees and vegetation died. Nothing was added to relieve the acidty of the lakes. What happened to the pH of the Clear water Lake? Why?
4) Which of the three from question 1 was the least effective action taken to reduce acidity? Explain.
5) Which of the three approaches used will have the greatest overall effect? Explain.
Thank you for help on any of these questions. They are a bit confusing for me that’s why i need help on them.
